How many of us can say we know someone who snores (yourself included)? ALL of us right? Well I am here to tell you that snoring is NOT NORMAL! Snoring has been something we all have put up with at some point whether it be with friends on a weekend getaway, a member of our family, or our bed partners. But putting up with it isn’t the norm. We have just made it that because so many people suffer from it. But don’t you ever wonder why some people snore and others do not?
William C. Dement (the Father of sleep) said, “Sleep disordered breathing in its various manifestations is arguably the number one health problem in the US, and probably throughout the world”. There is SO much that happens when we sleep, we can’t afford to miss out on it! It truly is the recovery time for the body. We release essential hormones for muscle growth and recovery. Growth hormones can help burn fat and turn it into muscle, helps strengthen ligaments and tendons, and enhances protein synthesis. Proper sleep enhances our concentration, mood, reduces stress and boosts our immune system! All are amazing things and essential for a healthy body.
Why do we snore?
- Throat weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep.
- Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in the muscles.
- Fat gathering in and around the throat. (i.e: weight gain)
- Obstruction in the nasal passageway.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- The tissues at the top of airways touching each other, causing vibrations.
- Relaxants such as alcohol or drugs relaxing throat muscles.
- Sleeping on one’s back, which may result in the tongue dropping to the back of the mouth.
What to do about it…
The best thing to do is to consult a sleep specialist or your dentist if they are well educated on the topic. And when I say well educated, I mean have taken classes to specifically learn about this. There are many out there who claim to know, but do not know. Do yourself a favor and seek out a specialist. There are many easy ways to treat this and I myself have treated patients and have seen lives change. It is a beautiful thing to experience. It’s time to throw those alarm clocks away!
