Why the Grape is Good for You

Im not referring to the grape we ‘oh so love’ to enjoy with our dinner, although I am a fan. I am referring to the purest form a grape can come in… the extract of it. Grape seed extract has been proven to be beneficial for us, not only to assist in giving us healthy gums, but healthy hearts as well! Let me break it down for ya…

The leaves and fruit of the grape have been used medicinally since ancient Greece. Today, grape seed extract is used for conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, such as: atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor circulation, diabetes, macular degeneration (which can cause blindness); inflammation, cancer prevention, and wound healing.

Kind of a lot of stuff eh? Important stuff at that! Its funny to me because these are the things the medical world is not informing us of, unless you go to a naturopath doctor. And by saying that, I am not insinuating a naturopath doctor is the best way to go. I think both MD’s and ND’s can teach us different approaches. It’s just that MD’s are more apt to write us a prescription for some drug instead of looking at what we can supply our bodies with naturally. But for something as simple as adding grape seed extract to our daily diet intake… look at what we can avoid.

The main reason I am writing about it today is to focus on the inflammation it prevents in us. Time to get all scientific on you, but its important! The bioflavonoids in grape seed extract help strengthen and protect cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Its antioxidant properties are considered to be stronger than those of vitamin C and Vitamin E. It helps to repair connective tissue while promoting skin enzyme activity. Grape seed extract aids wound healing by helping to regenerate damaged blood vessels and clearing harmful bacteria from the wound.

When one suffers from any kind of periodontal (gum) disease, a breakdown in the tissue occurs and the body treats it like it would any other infection in your body. It starts sending reinforcements like cytokines and WBC’s to the area to fight off the infection (bacteria) and re-build the tissue. With the assistance of grape seed extract… talk about reinforcements people! It will help the healing process HUGELY! Now… that being said; Everyones mouth is different and sometimes if someone has let the disease progress SO far… a more aggressive approach to getting rid of the disease may be needed.

Grape seed extract can be a GREAT preventative tool to create and support healthy gums as well as healthy bodies :)  Wine directly applied to gums can be a source of application ;) Otherwise… it comes in pill and liquid form. Liquid form is recommended for the gum treatment. Apply to your toothbrush and direct to your gums. The pill form is recommended for a stronger supportive immune system. Give it 4-7 weeks to notice a difference. Try it out and report back!
